Categories of Nonimmigrant Visas

Nonimmigrant visas are best thought of as temporary visas for an extended stay, typically up to a maximum of three years. There are 21 primary categories of nonimmigrant visas, designated by a letter of the alphabet.

These include:

  • A for career diplomats
  • B for temporary visitors for business and pleasure
  • C for aliens in transit
  • D for ship crew members
  • E for treaty traders and investors
  • F for students
  • G for representatives of international organizations
  • H for workers of any skill level
  • I for representatives of foreign media
  • M for students in nonacademic institutions
  • N for parents and children of special immigrants
  • O for aliens with extraordinary abilities
  • P for entertainers
  • Q for participants in cultural exchange programs
  • R for ordained religious workers
  • T for victims of trafficking in persons
  • TN for NAFTA professionals
  • U for criminal victims

In addition to the above designations, there is one special category designation for members of NATO performing service in the United States.

Visa Waiver Program

Through a special visa waiver program, the USCIS also allows certain individuals of nonimmigrant status from qualified countries to enter the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa.

Pleasure and Business Visitor Nonimmigrant Visas

Typically, nonimmigrant visas are granted without difficulty to people wishing to visit the U.S. for recreation, business sales or marketing trips for commercial transactions. Visitors may also be issued a multipurpose visa, valid for up to one year and renewable for six months thereafter. Holders of these B-1 or B-2 visas may not accept employment in the United States, but options are available to allow work for a foreign company doing business in America.

Student Nonimmigrant Visas

Attending an American university is the dream of many students and their parents around the world. Students enrolled in qualifying educational institutions such as colleges, universities and seminaries may apply for a F-1 student visa. Students, scholars and instructors and au pairs may may also qualify for a J visa.
